Train feels the strain

 Previous 1 2 3

Stephen Jones, 45, from Ellesmere Port, had difficulties travelling to Liverpool and was left standing on the platform for 40 minutes before being told no trains were running.

He said: "Nobody seemed to know what was going on."

Tina Jones, from Walton, boarded the 6.57 at Kirkdale only to be told to get off the train at the next stop, Sandhills.

Mrs Jones, 41, said: "Everyone from my train, and the train before, were turfed off at Sandhills and told to wait five minutes.

"But when that train arrived, everyone was told to get off that and wait another five minutes."

Robert Valentino, a construction worker from Litherland, was also told to wait at Sandhills.

He said: "People are annoyed because they are stranded where there are no buses or taxis."

A spokesman for Merseytravel, said: "People getting off at Sandhills are able to get on one of the Southport or Ormskirk trains into Central station.

"There have been one or two slight problems and there may have to be a few short term alterations to the service."

The Kingsway and Queensway Tunnels closed to traffic at 11.30pm yesterday.

Mersey Ferries will not run until 12.30am tomorrow.

The industrial action means:

* More than 50,000 Liverpool children get the day off school.

* More than 80,000 commuters have had to find alternative ways of crossing the river Mersey.

* Council services including bin collections have been hit.

* Police officers have had to fill in for civilian staff in key positions.

* A massive strain has been put on the Widnes-Runcorn bridge by commuters.

Union officials today pledged further industrial action - even warning the Mersey tunnels could close for five days next month.

* Three flights to France from Liverpool John Lennon airport were cancelled this morning due to industrial action by French air traffic controllers.

The affected flights were easyJet's 7.55am Paris service and Ryanair's 6.50am Bergerac and 9.20am Carcassonne flights.
