And he denied the tram row was fuelled by animosity between himself and Merseytravel chief executive Neil Scales.

He added: "I should point out that there is no truth in the suggestion of any bad relationship between me and Neil.

"It is never personal and if Neil was here he would say the same."

The leader of the council, Mike Storey, was however less conciliatory, attacking the "politicking" of Labour MPs and councillors, who held a press conference last week criticising the Lib Dem council's record of delivering major projects.

He also accused Merseytravel of being "divorced" from Merseyside and said the council rightly expressed its views about Line Two because the scheme was still in a period of consultation.

He added: "I regret that Merseytravel has a lack of understanding about what consultation is about.

"In hindsight I should have realised that when we were consulted on our views for Line Two that once we gave our views we would be accused of derailing the project.

"I have to say that I have never had the feeling that Merseytravel represents Merseyside completely.

"It seems to my mind to be quite divorced from Liverpool. I would like to see a closer relationship and if that means banging heads together, then so be it."

The council's executive board is now expected to agree the minutes of last night's minutes which will in effect shelve their objections to Line Two.

It is understood the move will give MET the confidence to submit their bid for Line One of the scheme, which will cost an estimated £228m
