Tunnels police to get body armour after safety probe
Previous 1 2
The protective clothing is expected to be available to officers early next year.
But the move has prompted the Mersey Tunnels User Association to renew its calls for the tunnels police to be absorbed into the Merseyside force.
A spokesman said: "We do feel strongly that the tunnels police should be integrated with Merseyside police.
"Effectively what we have is a large private road, with a private police force in the middle of Merseyside force's area. It's virtually unheard of.
"It would then be up to the police authority to decide how many officers there were, where they were needed and if they needed body armour.
"They would also be able to take the body armour from a central facility. Instead the tolls are being used to pay for it.

"If there is an incident that necessitates them to wear body armour then Merseyside police would be involved anyway.
"The real issue here is that Merseytravel is acting as if it is a police authority when it is nothing of the sort."
