Tom Houghton, one of the picket line organisers of the Stanlow protests five years ago told the Daily Post the protests would fail and urged drivers not to panic-buy.
Yesterday he said: "It was exactly as expected. There was no coordination whatsoever and the whole thing has fallen flat.
"If Andrew Spence, who's behind all this, can only get 20 people to turn up on his home turf at Jarrow then it shows how pitiful the whole thing was."
Across the country barely more than a dozen people met at any one place.
Refineries and oil terminals carried on as usual, with fuel tankers leaving and arriving on schedule. At the Shell refinery in Jarrow, south Tyneside, demonstrators were outnumbered by members of the media.
Fuel Lobby organiser Andrew Spence insisted he had never planned for a mass demonstration.
