We’ll stamp our feet over Royal Mail plan, MPs say

Royal Mail sorting office at Copperas Hill

LIVERPOOL MPs last night warned they were prepared to put pressure on government ministers to save the city’s main postal sorting office.

Crisis talks were held with Royal Mail’s northern director, Steven Cameron, at Copperas Hill yesterday.

Walton MP Peter Kilfoyle joined Riverside MP Louise Ellman, Bootle MP Joe Benton and Liverpool Vision in lobbying the service to review alternative plans that could keep jobs in the city.

Speaking to the Daily Post after the meeting, Mr Kilfoyle suggested more should be done in Whitehall.

The talks come in the wake of Royal Mail last week announcing it would prefer a move to Warrington over retaining a sorting office in Liverpool.

Their stated intention would mean some 480 jobs leaving the city with around 280 jobs axed.

Furious city leaders have also assessed the knock-on economic impact on Liverpool could cost a total of around £26m.
