What has happened to our new bypass?

Peter Bedson, of Guelph Street, said: "It is good news that the hospital is staying.

"But we would like a timescale for when road improvements are going to happen.

"We had hoped that the hospital would be rebuilt alongside the bypass, and feel that our views have not really been included."

Karen Flynn, of Albert Edward Street, said: "We need a new hospital, but the people of Kensington Fields really need the Hall Lane bypass as well.

"There is no sign that the current traffic problems aregoing to get any easier."

Central ward councillor Nick Small added: "That road should have been built in the 1960s but has never materialised.

"We could have been in this position months ago if the council had agreed to the hospital's request at the start. That would have allowed more time to work with the community to get the best possible deal."

A council spokesman said: "The executive board will now be asked to withdraw the current Hall Lane scheme, allowing the hospital to proceed with its plans. The council and the NHS trust will ask for the funding to be held over while we workon developing an alternative road scheme that satisfies all sides.

"In the short term, we will try to manage traffic flow and explore better use of existing roads."
