Nathan McMullen

NATHAN McMullen was top of the bill today after being named ECHO young comic of the year.

The 15-year-old, who is studying for 10 GCSEs, took the Liverpool Comedy Festival's top Stand-Out prize for new talent.

Now the Wood-church high school pupil will appear in festival finale Best of Liverpool show at the Royal Court Theatre on Sunday evening, alongside professional comics including Pauline Daniels and Micky Finn.

Nathan said: "It's just a fantastic feeling to have won. Now I may even consider being a comedian for a career."

Nathan beat 11 other finalists in a contest held at Paul McCartney's Fame school, Lipa, last night.

Altogether more than 300 school pupils aged 14 to 18, had taken part in a 12-month search for the best young comedian, sponsored by the ECHO.

Nathan wins a personal cheque for £250 and the same amount for his school.

The runners-up were Elric Cadwallader, 17, of Sutton high school, and Michael Edwards, 16, from Wirral Grammar.

Both won cheques for £100 and the same amount for their schools.

Festival organiser Kevin Fearon said: "We had a fantastic response and the standard was uniformly high."

Now festival organisers say they will establish a special young people's comedy club in September, so that interested pupils can continue treading the boards.
