Accidents create road chaos

A MERSEYSIDE motorway was closed in both directions today after a series of crashes. There was chaos on the M53 in Wirral after nine vehicles were involved in collisions. Paramedics were called to the scene at 7.30am when a car travelling towards Wallasey crashed into the central reservation. A 43-year-old man, suffering multiple injuries,was found lying in the road and was taken to Arrowe Park Hospital. Story continues ADVERTISEMENT There were further accidents between junction 2 and 3involving five vehicles on the northbound carriageway and three vehicles on the southbound. Merseyside Police were trying to establish what had happened. But it led to long tailbacks at the Birkenhead Tunnel as traffic travelling towards Liverpool was diverted. The crashes added to existing problems for motorists travelling between Wirral and Liverpool this morning.
