SIR PAUL McCARTNEY was the surprise guest at a House of Commons Capital of Culture reception - and gave a tongue-in-cheek hint that he may write a song to celebrate 2008.
The Beatles legend delighted 200 guests from the worlds of politics, business and the arts by popping in to a launch of plans for the run-up to Liverpool gaining the title.
By coincidence, Sir Paul had joined a lunch hosted by the Vegetarian Society in the room next to the Capital of Culture gathering, overlooking the River Thames.
He joined the guests in the mistaken belief that his brother, Mike McCartney, a photographer, would be present but stayed to sign autographs on 2008 strategy plans.
And, speaking exclusively to the Daily Post, Sir Paul revealed he was considering adding his own star quality to the 2008 celebrations, now just under 1,000 days away.
He said: "I had to pop in to see if our kid was there, because it would have been so strange if we had both been at the Commons in adjacent rooms.
"But I was also happy to lend my support to the event, because we were all so chuffed at winning the Capital of Culture honour."
Asked if he would play a part in the festivities, Sir Paul said: "I haven't any plans at the moment, but I certainly would not rule it out.
"As we get closer to 2008, I'm sure more plans will be made and other things will happen spontaneously."
And, asked by the Daily Post's reporter if his contribution might be a song to mark 2008, Sir Paul joked: "You could write the words and I will write the music."
Earlier, the reception was entertained by the Liverpool-based acapella group Sense of Sound, who sang three songs.
