It's bad medicine

DOCTORS in Liverpool are backing a campaign to bring down a mobile phone mast.

Thirty GPs, hospital doctors and consultants have signed a petition over the installation which they believe is a risk to health.

The petition, started by Dr Phil Weston, urges colleagues to voice their opposition to the mast on Cambridge Road, Crosby.

Dr Weston, 37, said doctors have a duty to ensure the health of the local population.

"This body of doctors is specifically concerned about this site as our patients, children, friends colleagues are affected.

"We feel able and justified in making this statement due to our independent ability to scientific al ly evaluate cu r re nt information.

"It is slap-bang in the middle of a residential area with a large population of young children and is in close proximity to three schools."

The 15ft mast has been installed by mobile phone company O2 on top of an old telephone exchange.

Protesters fear the radiation beams from the mast could trigger health problems such as cancer.

Dr Weston, a father of two young children, said: "Mobile phone masts should not be in residential areas until we know what we are dealing with."

Although the mast was erected 12 months ago, local opposition has delayed its activation although it could be within the next few weeks.

A spokeswoman for O2 said the company had tried to find alter-native sites.

"We believe this site is safe and is within international guidelines.

"The service in the Crosby area has not been good for a long time and we are trying to improve that service for our customers. The fact is the mast has to be in the area where the service is being used."
