War on drugs

Mar 25 2004

By Jenny Watson, Liverpool Echo

Rat on a rat campaign

In five days since the campaign was launched in Knowsley, the number of calls coming into Crimestoppers almost doubled.

So far 70 names have been reported by police from communities blighted by the effects of drugs.

Police say work is already underway to turn the names into arrests and are warning dealers their cards are being marked.

The new campaign was launched last Tuesday and posters have been emblazoned over Kirkby and Huyton police stations.

The scheme has been backed by Home Office Minister Hazel Blears.

Crimestoppers have reported receiving over 40 calls in just a day and a half as a direct result of the campaign - which is twice the amount which would normally be received on one average day for the charity.

Elaine Milne from Crimestoppers said: "We are delighted with the calls we've received after the launch of the 'Rat on a Rat' campaign and I'd like to thank everyone who has called us with information.

"We're very grateful that local people have taken the time to call Crimestoppers and are pleased to be so busy.

"Although this is a Knowsley campaign, the benefits are clear for the whole of Merseyside as the calls we've had are from across the county.

"We would encourage more residents to continue to call us about drug dealing, and be reassured that the information you give us can be given anonymously, but will be passed on to the police who will take firmaction."

Chief Supt Simon Byrne, Knowsley Area Commander, added: "The results are tremendous and it shows quite clearly that the people of Knowsley want to help us in giving information to take drug dealers off our streets.

"I am sure this will continue and I would urge local people to keep calling Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111 and giving information."
