Where were all the people?

The Queen arrives in Liverpool to near empty streets - April 2004

THE Queen arrived in Liverpool today for the historic Maundy service - but only 400 well-wishers gathered to greet her.

Around 100 people were at Lime Street station to greet the royal train. The crowd outside Liverpool Cathedral ahead of the service was around 300, including more than 100 school pupils whose visits were arranged weeks ago.

The turnout was in stark contrast to scenes in Paris earlier this week when tens of thousands of people lined the capital's streets to cheer the Queen.

It was thought more people would gather to see the Queen and Duke of Edinburgh who were planning a walkabout in Queen's Walk after the service.

Tommy McDonald, 51, from Tuebrook, said: "It's great to see the Queen on Merseyside.

"But there were not many people waiting at the station for her, which is a bit of a shame."
