City Iraqi bids to rebuild country

Iraqi Hameed Al-Badairy

A LIVERPOOL Iraqi is helping to set up an organisation with the aim of rebuilding the war-ravaged country.

Hameed Al-Badairy, 33, who has visited his home city Al-Kut in south east Iraq, says thousands of people are dying every day in his homeland because of a lack of basic health care and provisions.

During his visit, Hameed's 18-year-old nephew Mustafa died of leukaemia as doctors could not offer him proper treatment.

He said: "All they could do was change his blood every few weeks.

"Even then, my family was having to run around trying to find people to donate it.

"This is a problem for thousands of Iraqis, not just my family.

"Basic care is just not possible and diseases that are treatable in Britain are killing people in Iraq.

"There is no infrastructure, the place has been ravaged by war after war.

"It is like going back in time over there.

"The people are so frustrated. They want to move forward, but in the year since Saddam's fall there has been little progress.

"I look at kids here happy and laughing and compare them to those in Iraq, who have seen nothing but war."

Hameed left Iraq for Liverpool 16 years ago.
