Bridges should be caged

Jun 2 2004

By Alan Weston Daily Post Staff

URGENT action to improve safety on Merseyside's road bridges is being called for in the wake of the tragic death of a Wirral van driver on Bank Holiday Monday.

Christopher McCaffrey, 33, from Moreton, was killed after a rock was hurled through the windscreen as he drove along the busy A41 dual carriageway in Rock Ferry.

He lost control of the vehicle when the glass was shattered by the missile, causing it to flip over and crash into the central reservation.

A 15-year-old schoolboy from Rock Ferry was last night charged with murder and is to appear before Birkenhead magistrates this morning.

The Association of British Drivers is calling for problem bridges to be "caged" to guard against further tragedies like the death of Mr McCaffrey.

Spokesman Tony Vickers said: "Mindless louts will continue to drop bricks onto cars unless they are prevented from doing so. This death should shock the Government into urgent action.

"The police and local councils are quick to put up speed cameras at so-called accident black spots.

"Now they must take steps to protect drivers at bridges in urban areas where there are problems with missiles being dropped.
