Lesbian 'killed by her lover'

Jun 29 2004

By Sarah Chapman Echo Reporter, Liverpool Echo

A LESBIAN who could not admit her sexuality to her family was stabbed to death by her ex-lover, a court heard.

A Liverpool crown court jury was told that mother-of-one Tracie Grundy, 40, murdered her on-off girlfriend Nicola Edge by knifing her in the neck.

Grundy has pleaded not guilty to murder.

Graham Morrow QC, prosecuting, told the court that Grundy and Miss Edge, 31, had lived together for two years until January 2003.

He said the love affair deteriorated and Grundy had a relationship with another woman.

The court heard that Grundy has a son, Ricky, whom she lived with, and the relationship was described as stormy.

Mr Morrow said one of the problems was that Miss Edge had failed to admit her sexuality to her family.

Miss Edge also refused to allow Grundy to see her two children, claimed Mr Morrow.

The court heard that shortly before Miss Edge was found dead at Grundy's flat in Circular Road, Tranmere, Ricky Grundy had returned from work to find the couple cuddling and sharing a bottle of wine.

On New Year's Day, Grundy, Miss Edge and some friends spent the evening drinking.

Mr Morrow told the jury of eight women and four men: "Miss Edge started arguing with Miss Grundy about their sexuality.

"Miss Grundy and the others went back to her flat for a drink.

"All went by taxi at around 11.20pm and Ricky Grundy started watching television. During this time Tracie Grundy started arguing with Nicola Edge and she said she was going to bed."

Mr Morrow said Miss Edge stood outside Grundy's bedroom and sent her a text message which said "Tracie".

The court heard that Grundy went to ask Miss Edge to leave.

Mr Morrow told the court: "Miss Grundy went into the kitchen, collected a knife, walked through the living room and went into her bedroom where, we say, she stabbed Nicola Edge.

"Miss Edge came back into the living room, holding her neck. She collapsed on the floor of the kitchen."

The court heard one of the friends called an ambulance and they all left, with Grundy going to the Tranmere Park pub, where she worked.

Miss Edge's body was discovered by police officers.

Mr Morrow said when Grundy was arrested she told detectives she could not recall the incident.
