LIVERPOOL Council will today fulfil its promise and get the Merseytram scheme back on track.
At a stormy meeting last night senior city leaders pledged their "full support" for the project and denied their actions had brought it to the brink of being scuppered.
The single remaining bidder MET (Mersey Express Tramway) has delayed submitting its bid for Line One after the council's executive board requested a possible re-routing of Line Two from Whiston Hospital to John Lennon Airport.
The decision sparked a bitter exchange between the council and Merseytravel amid claims of a personality clash between the two organisation's chief executives.
Last night, the council insisted it still believes Line Two should run to the airport but indicated it will "step aside" for the sake of the project.
Council chief executive Sir David Henshaw told the city's regeneration select committee: "The critical nature of Line Two has only just been realised in the last two months and within the last year the importance of the airport for the city has grown.
"We believe on a level playing field we should go to the airport earlier.
"But as a result of the objection from Merseytravel, the proposal will go to the executive board that we step aside and ignore our views."
