THESE are the first pictures of a futuristic style city centre housing scheme set to stand alongside the historic Georgian terraces of Liverpool's Rodney Street.
Although there were objections to the development from some residents, the city council's planning committee have given the ambitious project the go-ahead.
The scheme, by local developers and land owners Frenson, will see around 70 apartments and family homes built on a site blitzed by German bombers in 1941.
The development, centred close to Chinatown on the Roscoe Lane car park behind Berry Street, will include a special form of meshing.
Architect Jennifer Dixon of Austin Smith Lord explained that under new design rules, south-facing homes of the future would need to be shielded from the heat of sunshine. Double facade designs are seen as the best way of resolving this problem.
The chairman of the planning committee, Cllr Lady Doreen Jones said the go-ahead had been given after the architects showed the committee a sample of the products to be used during the construction of the homes.
She said: "It is an unusual design, but we recognise it is a difficult site.
"It is close to Rodney Street, but will look very different to what is already there.
"I have let it be known to all architects and planners that our committee will demand the highest standards of building design and products for schemes of the future.
"It is something we will take more notice of in the future to ensure that schemes winning approval will be built in good quality materials.
