Residents unite over Edge Lane expansion

Jan 26 2005

By Nick Coligan, Liverpool Echo

RESIDENTS are planning to fight multimillion pound plans to expand Edge Lane.

Dozens of families whose homes are threatened with demolition are to push for a public inquiry, which would delay the scheme by up to 18 months.

They will put together a string of objections which they hope will prompt the government to look closer at the Edge Lane Expressway scheme, which will transform the route from the M62 into the city.

Although many Edge Hill residents say they do not oppose the widening of traffic-clogged Edge Lane, they do not want to sell their homes to make way for proposed luxury apartment blocks alongside it.

A meeting has been arranged by three residents' associations - Quorn Street, Edge Hill and Needham Road - where a plan of action will be set out.

Janet Kelly, treasurer of Needham Road Residents Association, said: "We will talk about the plans and set out our objections, which should be enough to cause a public inquiry.

"We say they should go no further than altering the road. If they have to knock our houses down, they should build us replacements so we can move back to the same area we have lived for years.

"We have decided to pull three residents' associations together because we will be stronger working together."

More than 400 homes will be demolished in the £65m scheme, clearing the way for 300 modern properties and commercial developments.

A spokesman for Liverpool Land Development Company (LLDC), which is overseeing the scheme, said: "It is important to stress that the issuing of compulsory purchase orders is the start ofa process giving residents and businesses the opportunity to make formal representations and objections.

"While this continues, LLDC and its partners will continue to negotiate with residents over the sale of their properties.

"Residents will receive the market value for their homes, and owners are being advised to seek independent legal and financial advice."

The meeting, which will be held tomorrow at Kensington primary school in Brae Street at 6 pm, is open to all residents.
