Tunnel tolls battle

Apr 26 2005

Daily Post

CALLS for Wirral Council to demand an end to tunnel tolls were thrown out last night.

Anti-toll campaigner Cllr Jacquie McKelvie had asked the local authority to oppose the charge, which rose by 10p to £1.30 at the beginning of April.

She also asked the council to support her bid to get the tunnels adopted as part of the national road network.

Mrs McKelvie is a member of Merseyside Passenger Transport Authority and was the only member to vote against the increase when it was passed earlier this year.

She put forward a motion at last night's full council meeting claiming the tunnels were vital to Wirral's economy. But the motion was rejected.

After the meeting Cllr McKelvie said: "We condemn this decision. Once again the council has gone against the wishes of the people of Wirral, and we will keep on fighting tunnel charges."

The motion had said the tolls were potentially putting Wirral businesses and residents at a disadvantage.

Councillors were asked to vote for an end to tolls and for the tunnels to be included in the national road network along with any outstanding debts and future maintenance costs.

Merseyside Passenger Transport Authority claims scrapping the tolls would would pose health and safety problems, and result in scores of redundancies.
