Hospital workers in second pay strike

Jun 20 2005

Liverpool Echo

HOSPITAL workers were today continuing their second strike over pay.

Hundreds of cleaners, catering and laundry staff at Aintree Hospitals' site in Walton and Fazakerley walked began a 48-hour protest yesterday.

The workers, who earn the minimum wage of £4.85 an hour, say they had to take action after being offered a pay rise of five pence- an-hour.

The workers, members of Unison, GMB and TGWU unions, are employed by Initial Hospital Services on behalf of Aintree Hospitals Trust.

They began the action last Monday with a 24-hour walkout demanding equal treatment to staff who work directly for the NHS.

The NHS minimum wage is £5.86.

Initial says it cannot pay any more as the company has a fixed price contract with the hospital trust.

The hospitals affected have made contingency plans, including reducing the number of hot meals given to patients from two to one a day during the industrial action.
