HUNDREDS of drivers will face breathalyser tests over the next few weeks as the region launches its biggest ever attack on summer drink-driving.
All five police forces in the North West - including Merseyside,, Cheshire and Lancashire - will come down harder than ever before on drink drivers in the first co-ordinated campaign of its type.
Roadside checks will be conducted on key routes by specialist teams which will work exclusively on the campaign.
Motorists prosecuted could face a 12-month ban, a fine of up to £5,000 and up to six months in prison.
Normally associated with the run-up to Christmas, this summer's crackdown is aimed at the garden party and barbecue season where it is feared the warm weather may tempt drivers to offend.
It is hoped to cut down on last year's grim statistics in the North West where drink driving claimed the lives of 41 people with another 301 seriously injured.
Despite social and moral pressure, a hard core of drivers continue to drink and drive and it is these the campaigns are principally aimed at.
The police message - to be launched on Merseyside in St Helens this morning - will highlight the tragic consequences of drinking and driving. A silhouette shape of a "missing guest" will be present at the launch.
At the same time, doctors at the Countess of Chester Hospital will spell out the disfiguring impact of being involved in a drink drive collision.
Police and road safety officers will stress the message that even one drink can impact on a driver's ability behind the wheel.
