THE shocking murder of a teenager by a racist gang has devastated his family. Sam Lister reports

IT WAS late at night when Anthony Walker chose to wait with his girlfriend at her bus stop to make sure she got home safely.

Moments later this chivalrous act would end in his horrific death. The deeply religious teenager was just a short walk away from the three-bedroomed detached house he grew up in with his four sisters and younger brother.

But he would never make it back to the loving family home.

Instead, the studious young man was savagely attacked with an axe.

The murder is one that has shocked hardened detectives and the close-knit community.

And it has left his family reeling from a mixture of horror, disbelief and devastation at losing their "perfect" boy..

Anthony had his future mapped out. First he wanted to get good enough A-level results to win a place at a London university. Then he would embark on a high-flying career in law.

He was a talented basketball player, but showed remarkable maturity when he shunned a professional career in favour of his studies and Church duties.

His role as a youth leader at the Grace Family Church in Aigburth Road was incredibly important to him and he also sang and played in the band as well as trying to set up a basketball team for local children.

But, despite his serious nature, Anthony was much-loved for his fun-loving happy-go-lucky side.

He was outgoing, loved playing sport and followed Arsenal football team.

He was also a budding DJ and liked spending time in his bedroom mixing records.

Sister Donna, 29, yesterday paid tribute to her loving younger brother.

She said: "Anthony was always concerned about others and he loved to laugh. He was outgoing and had lots of friends.

"Everyone who knew him wanted to be his friend, people just warmed to him.

"This is something that happens to other people, I cannot believe he is gone.

"He will be missed by so many people."
