THOUSANDS of music lovers have made this year's Mathew Street festival the biggest and best.

Early predictions are that this year's event had record-breaking attendances and brought more than £25m into the city.

Early morning rain gave way to warm summer sunshine yesterday afternoon and around 330,000 festival-goers enjoyed live music from chart toppers and Brit award winners McFly, Merseyside band Amsterdam, James Bourne and Lemar.

Tribute bands took to the other stages around the city and live music blasted out from many city centre pubs.

A spokesman for Liverpool Culture Company said: "The festival has been fabulous. McFly went down well although the wet weather in the morning did affect attendance. The sun shone after that and it became very busy."

Joe and Dot Shaw, of Anfield, are Mathew Street regulars.

Mr Shaw said: "We are both big Beatles fans. We were 30 when they started and we are 75 now! I like the stages all across the city centre but I think they should stick to the music and not have so many rides."

James Scraggs, 67, and his wife Elizabeth, 71, of Walton, caught the ferry to Wirral where for the first time in festival history a stage was set up.
