Drivers' anger as busy city street closed for golf

Cllr Peter Millea plays crazy golf on Castle Street

RUSH-hour traffic came to a halt this morning as a city centre street was closed - and a crazy golf course set up in the middle.

Castle Street was being shut to all traffic until teatime to mark annual European Car Free Day.

The golf course was set out instead.

But commuters already hit by the Big Dig were stuck in further queues as city centre jams grew.

As commuters fumed, the city's executive member for regeneration, Cllr Peter Millea, played a game of miniature golf on the deserted street to promote the initiative.

Organisers denied they were being anti-motorist.

Cllr Millea said: "Car Free Day is an opportunity for people to think about whether they really need to bring a car into the city centre.

But one commuter, who was made late for work, said: "Pedestrianising Castle Street is a nice idea in theory but the reality was a massive pain this morning."
