MERSEYSIDE and Cheshire's renal dialysis service will be taken over by a private company and lost to the NHS, the Daily Post can reveal.

News of the pending deal comes after a week of speculation that there is a long-term Government programme to privatise the NHS.

Over the weekend, Walton MP Peter Kilfoyle was one of 19 leading politicians and medical professionals to back a campaign to keep the NHS public.

Last night, a spokesman for the Cheshire and Merseyside Strategic Health Authority confirmed that the renal dialysis service would be privatised.

The spokesman said: "There are currently proposals to privatise the dialysis service. We are going through a process to determine which organisation would be best placed to take over the service."

He added: "Over the last three years, the NHS has been increasingly using the independent sector to supplement capacity and resources.

"Experience to date has been positive and has demonstrated that the NHS and independent sector can work in partnership with positive results for patients. Increased use of the independent sector has provided options for patients.

For example, patients who want to reduce the time they wait for treatment may be able to be referred to an independent provider."

The spokesman said there were proposals to create an additional 24 renal dialysis satellite stations in Cheshire and Merseyside.
