The spokesman said: "There are currently proposals to privatise the dialysis service. We are going through a process to determine which organisation would be best placed to take over the service."
He added: "Over the last three years, the NHS has been increasingly using the independent sector to supplement capacity and resources.
"Experience to date has been positive and has demonstrated that the NHS and independent sector can work in partnership with positive results for patients. Increased use of the independent sector has provided options for patients.
For example, patients who want to reduce the time they wait for treatment may be able to be referred to an independent provider."
The spokesman said there were proposals to create an additional 24 renal dialysis satellite stations in Cheshire and Merseyside.
