Drivers face delays with six-month road closure

Oct 4 2005

By Liam Murphy Daily Post Staff

THOUSANDS of motorists are facing six months of delays after it emerged the main route between Wirral and North Wales is to be closed until March 2006.

Work is due to start on a £4.9m resurfacing scheme on the A550 Welsh Road, which will include improving traffic signals, next Monday.

A three-mile stretch (about 5km) will be affected between the junction with the A41 (Chester Road) at Hooton, and the junction with the A540 at Two Mills.

It means drivers will be re-directed along the M53 round Chester, adding a significant distance to their journey.

But the Highways Agency says the road will be re-opened from December 9 to January 9 to help accommodate Christmas and New Year traffic.

About 14,500 vehicles use that section of the road each day.

Highways Agency project manager, Paul Elliot, said access to local properties and businesses would be maintained at all times.

He said: "This is a major project that will bring long term benefits for motorists and local residents. We would ask people to bear with us while the work is being carried out.

"We have consulted with local interests to try to minimise any inconvenience and will keep local people updated on progress.
