ANTHONY CAVANAGH died yesterday afternoon, on the day after his 22nd birthday.
The young Royal Navy seaman never regained consciousness after being knocked out with a single punch in a Liverpool bar.
His death comes just six days after Oxford graduate Christopher McBride lost his fight for life in the same hospital, following another sudden, senseless assault in a city bar. Christopher was 25.
Liverpool aspires to become a 24-hour city, its vibrant and sophisticated nightlife forming a key element of its identity.
That dream is being fundamentally flawed by a culture of alcohol-fuelled, mindless violence which rears its head every weekend in the city centre.
The police cannot win this battle alone. Bar and pub licensees must learn to sell alcohol responsibly, and the young people who drink themselves into oblivion must learn to exert some self-control.
For the sake of Anthony, Christopher and thousands of other innocent young people like them now planning their night out in Liverpool this weekend, the time has come for urgent action to tackle this cancerous trend.
