IT WAS set up to stop the terrifying armed raids on banks and businesses across the region.
Operation Long Island - a branch of Merseyside police's Matrix unit - came into force this year and has helped curb the number of raids on guards by more than 27%
A total of 37 cash deliveries have been intercepted by criminals who have attacked security staff during the past five months - but that is down from 51 for the same period in 2004.
But now senior officers believe they have leads that could help them pin many of those robberies on to the gangs responsible.
And they have promised more swoops on crooks to reduce the number of attacks even further.
Merseyside police launched its Matrix unit earlier this year to target the criminals carrying out cash-in-transit robberies and dealing in drugs and guns.
The team has redesigned the way the force keeps track of security guards as they visit banks and businesses to collect the takings - and the way they hunt down thieves who target them.
