Region in 'energy waste epidemic'

Oct 26 2005

Daily Post

HOUSEHOLDS in the North West are wasting an estimated £85m through excessive energy use, a figure set to rise to a staggering £8.3bn by the year 2020.

Research commissioned by the Energy Saving Trust claims that the North West is in the grip of an "energy obesity epidemic".

The cost of energy waste could rise to £8.3bn along with 86 million tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions a year unless steps are taken to prevent this.

The cause of this huge amount of wastage comes in the form of household gadgets such as televisions and stereos.

People in the North West are said to have up to 12 gadgets unnecessarily on standby or charging at any one time.

Phil Sellwood, chief executive of the Energy Saving Trust, said: "Every time a gadget or appliance is needlessly left on standby, the energy used results in carbon dioxide being emitted into the atmosphere."

The research, Energy and Waste in the Age of Excess, shows that stereos left on stand-by account for £33m worth of energy wasted every year in the North West, while televisions and VCRs left on standby waste more than £30m worth of energy and produce almost 165,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions.

It was also revealed that appliances, such as mobile phones and i-pods, are making huge contributions to the energy wasted in the region.

The Energy and Waste survey was conducted to coincide with a new campaign from the Energy Saving Trust. The Save Your 20% campaign looks at how to adopt energy-saving measures
