They shot him in cold blood

Nov 4 2005

By Tony Barrett, Liverpool Echo

Police cars outside the Devonshire hotel after the shootings

THE chilling moment hotel boss Bill Harper was gunned down by robbers has been revealed by his devastated brother.

Dave Harper told the ECHO how the Devonshire House hotel manager had tried to defy the two armed raiders.

But when the 48-year-old refused to hand over the cash one turned to the other and said coldly "shoot him".

In a split second Mr Harper was shot in the stomach before the gunmen turned to a terrified 18-year-old barman and shot him in the arm.

Mr Harper was saved when he staggered into a conference of ambulance workers and pleaded: "Someone help me, I've been shot."

He is being treated at the Royal Liverpool hospital where he has undergone major surgery.

Yesterday he was visited by close personal friend Cherie Blair who was on Merseyside to tour schools and charities.

Mrs Blair, who is a regular guest of the hotel, said: "I know Bill very well, he is a wonderful man. We were all very shocked when we heard about what had happened.

"We are all thinking of him at this time."
