Appeal for baby headgear on NHS

Nov 16 2005

By Helen Hunt, Liverpool Echo

Mothers Sarah, Janine, Joanne and Sarah who are fighting for their childrens' plagiocephaly treatment to be made available on the NHS

THESE Merseyside mothers are fighting for treatment for their babies to be made available on the NHS.

After their children were born with plagiocephaly, a condition which causes deformity of the skull, they were forced to go private for treatment.

Now, after seeing amazing results with their own children, they want others to benefit and are signing a national petition calling for Tony Blair to take action.

Their children have been fitted with special headgear which remoulds the skull into a more rounded shape.

Janine Scott, 29, from Norris Green, said she has seen remarkable results in her 10 1/2-month-old son Jack Smith.

Ten-month-old Jack with the special headgear he wears as a result of his plagiocephaly to remould his skull into a more rounded shape

She said: "We were only given an 80% chance of correction - in eight weeks we have seen remarkable results. One of the mums has a child that no longer has to wear his band.

"The petition is going to Tony Blair to raise awareness of the condition and get the NHS to pay for treatment. We've discovered there are about four or five cases who've managed to get the NHS to pay, but we think it should be available to all."

If Jack's skull problems had not been corrected he would have had a lifetime of dental and eyesight problems, headaches, jaw ache and migraines.

Ms Scott and her partner Ian Smith paid £1,700 for Jack's cranio helmet and regular trips to a London clinic.
