Sir Paul targets land mines

Sir Paul McCartney and Heather Mills

SIR PAUL McCARTNEY and his wife, Heather Mills McCartney, hosted a benefit gala in Beverly Hills to put an end to land mines, which the ex-Beatle said killed one child every 18 minutes.

Governments should "listen to the voice of the people" and sign a treaty banning the devices, Sir Paul said.

"People don't like land mines, especially the survivors and the people who are living in the countries with them," Sir Paul said.

"They think they are cowardly, like we do, so I think it's down to the governments to listen to the people and sign the treaty and get rid of all these things and there would be an end to it."

About 1,000 guests were entertained by Sir Paul and Tony Bennett.
