Gateway delegation in call for government backing

Nov 22 2005

Daily Post

THE BATTLE for a second Mersey crossing will return to London today with a clear message for the Government - "are you supporting us on a new bridge or not?"

A Mersey Gateway delegation led by the leader and chief executive of Halton Council, Cllr Tony McDermott and David Parr, will demand action from Transport Minister Stephen Ladyman.

They will be joined by Liverpool John Lennon Airport managing director Neil Pakey and O'Connor Transport managing director Steve O'Connor.

They will highlight the urgent need for a new bridge over the River Mersey between Widnes and Runcorn.

Speaking from London last night, Cllr McDermott said: "The bottom line is 'is the Government supporting us or not'?

"It is now almost a year since we submitted the proposal to Parliament. We have had two false dawns - one when we thought we'd get an answer before the General Election and one when we thought we'd get one before the summer recess.

"We want to find out what the problem is, what the questions are we still have to answer and convince them him that this has to happen."
