50p rail deal sparks chaos

Dec 12 2005

By Mike Hornby, Liverpool Echo

POLICE were called to Liverpool Central station yesterday to control huge crowds of Christmas shoppers.

Passengers were turned away as trains and platforms filled up with thousands of people taking advantage of Merseyrail's 50p ticket offer.

At around 3pm there were queues for trains in the station shopping area.

British Transport Police officers maintained order and safety on the Northern Line platform and in the main foyer.

Janet Christie, from Crosby, had been shopping with her husband Philip and their two children.

Mrs Christie, 42, said: "I use Merseyrail to get to work every day but I have never seen the stations this busy. "We decided it is not worth the wait, so we're going to get the kids some tea and come back later when it will hopefully be a lot quieter."

Pram-pushing father Robert O'Keeffe, 27, from Aigburth added: "A ticket collector said it would be wise to carry on shopping for another hour and come back when it is less busy. I wouldn't want to be on the platform with my baby and this pram - it could be very claustrophobic."

A Merseyrail spokesman said the "Christmas Cracker" 50p fare deal had been a phenomenal success.

"There are times on the Thursdays and Sundays towards Christmas that the network will reach capacity.

"On these occasions we ask people to be patient and if possible get a later train or use a station away from the main shopping area - such as Moor-fields or Lime Street.

"Health and safety is a priority and there were extra staff on duty yesterday and control room was monitoring the situation. There was no danger."
