Row, row, row your boat

The Liverpool 8 rowers get some practice in at Wirral Docks

ROOKIE rowers are getting to grips with learning their new skills on the Mersey's dock system.

A squad of 30 was chosen from 250 who took part in tough physical auditions to join the ambitious rowing initiative fronted by Olympian Sir Steve Redgrave.

The five times gold medallist hopes under his guidance the Liverpool 8 will take part in this year's Henley Regatta.

The would-be oarsmen only have six months to prove themselves and are currently four weeks into a punishing training schedule to turn them from novices into a rowing squad.

Sir Steve, who visits the squad every week, has designed their training but the rowers work on a day-to-day basis at Liverpool Victoria Rowing Club in Wallasey.

Coach Paul Rafferty, from Northwich, said: "It's a combination of rowing technique, training programme and making sure their fitness programme is rowing-specific.

"I think they're doing extremely well although we're not there yet. And none of them had been in a boat before they started."
