A LIVERPOOL grandfather discovered he had a 33-year criminal record - even though he insists he has never broken the law in his life.
Pensioner Robert Taylor's world collapsed when he went to give evidence against a man accused of attacking him, only to be accused himself of having a string of serious convictions.
A defence barrister had obtained a copy of police records which said he had been:
* Arrested on a rape allegation * Convicted of causing grievous bodily harm * Banned for being a drink driver.
Today, devastated and confused by what happened, Mr Taylor, 68, from West Derby, said: "This has blighted my life and left me in a terrible state. I'm an innocent man but my name is being dragged through the mud.
"That barrister accused me in an open court. When I protested I was told to be quiet. He held a piece of paper in the air and told me I was a criminal."
Incredibly the case against his alleged attacker was then dismissed.
How he ended up on the police national database remains a total mystery, and little seems to have been done to help him find out.
But today his MP Bob Wareing promised to fight on his behalf.
