Last stand for Merseytram

TRANSPORT officials today said they would make one final attempt to save Merseytram after a crushing court defeat.

A high court judge threw out a Merseytravel appeal against the government's refusal to hand over £170m to line one, from the city centre to Kirkby.

The organisation was also told it had no grounds to challenge the judge's decision after a two-day hearing.

But Merseytravel chief executive Neil Scales said he would try to have the case heard by the court of appeal in a final bid to bring trams back to Merseyside.

He said: "We owe it to the people of Merseyside to give it one last throw of the dice."

Merseytravel has spent years planning the tram network and does not want to lose the promised £170m.

It has already spent £55m of taxpayers' money, which it will demand back from the government if Merseytram is not built.

Cllr Warren Bradley, leader of Liverpool council, said: "If Merseytravel wants to appeal, they will have the council's full support."

At the high court yesterday, Mr Justice Sullivan dismissed all three elements of Merseytravel's appeal.
