Cannabis man 73, faces jail

Feb 7 2006

by Sylvia Arkwright Echo reporter

A PENSIONER is facing a possible jail sentence after police found a "cannabis factory" in his home, a court was told today.

Leslie Williams, 73, built a greenhouse in the back bedroom of his house in Runcorn, Cheshire. The widower, a former Merchant Navy seaman, also installed "sophisticated" heating, lighting and extraction fans, Runcorn magistrates court heard.

Police were called to his house after neighbours had not seen him for some time and became worried.

Officers broke the door down and searched the house, finding 20 cannabis plants in the bedroom.

Williams, returning home from a local bookmaker, told officers he grew the plants to smoke cannabis for pain relief as he suffers from chronic arthritis after four strokes. His doctor was aware of his practice, the court was told.

Williams told officers he did not want to buy from street dealers so decided to grow his own.

He was charged with producing a class C drug on January 27.
