A 22-STONE man was told he was too fat to fit on an operating table minutes before potentially life-saving treatment was due to start.

Alan Nolan claimed doctors were aware of his size two months ago and promised to arrange specialist equipment.

He is now demanding an apology from the Royal Liverpool hospital after his angiogram, a procedure on his heart, was cancelled at the last minute.

The 57-year-old, from Everton, fears for his health because it is five months since he was told by a doctor that he could have problems with a heart valve.

Mr Nolan said: "Back in September, my doctor got in touch with the Royal because I needed urgent investigative treatment. There is a possibility I have congenital heart disease and at least one heart valve may be malfunctioning.

"In December, I went to the Royal and they said I would need an angiogram but, because I am a large bloke, they would have to sort out a table big enough to take me."

Mr Nolan's treatment was arranged for Thursday morning and he went into hospital on Wednesday night.

He was prepared for surgery with beta blockers and relaxants and was lying on a trolley waiting to be taken into the operating theatre when a nurse was sent to speak to him.
