Plan for £170m tram cash to aid transport shake-up

COUNCILLORS in Liverpool last night drew up a new shopping list of transport projects, using money earmarked for the doomed Merseytram network

Ambitious proposals include park and ride facilities across Merseyside, reopening a number of train stations and reopening the Wapping tunnel.

Politicians at Liverpool City Council meeting called for some of the £170m Government tram money to be used to help pay for the projects.

Executive member Cllr Paul Clein called for the improvements as part of the new Local Transport Plan, the area's transport blueprint for the coming five years.

Councillors backed calls for the Merseyside Strategic Transport Planning Committee (MSPTC) to apply for the funding to:

* Create more park and ride facilities near stations across Merseyside, including Edge Hill;

* Speed up plans to upgrade and reopen the Bootle Branch Line for passenger trains;

* To reopen stations such as Sefton Park, Edge Lane, Prescot Road, West Derby Road, Townsend Lane, Walton Lane and County Road;

* Reopen Wapping Tunnel, which runs from Edge Hill to Kings Dock to serve as a bus-link to the new arena and the waterfront.
