A SOLDIER from Liverpool is taking on a tough transatlantic challenge - rowing across the ocean.

Lance corporal Carl Powell will join colleagues from the Duke of Wellington Regiment in the daring bid.

The team members, in their boat the Yorkshire Warrior, will race 14 other vessels across the 3,100 nautical miles from New York to Cornwall.

They set off on their epic journey from New York on June 10 and aim to raise money for The Army Benevolent Fund through sponsorship.

Lance corporal Powell and the team are currently in training on the Dartmouth coast and are taking part in a series of trials at sea to perfect their rowing technique and familiarize themselves with the boat.

Team leader Lieutenant Mike Cataldo said: "To date, only 141 people have rowed the Atlantic so this really is the ultimate test of courage, determination and team work."

The soldiers hope to complete the challenge in 50 days and expect to arrive in the UK at the end of July.
