A VISION to create a £14m cinema, library and shopping complex needs council support to get off the ground.
The plan would see the Plaza community cinema and civic hall demolished and rebuilt alongside a modernised library in Crosby Road North, Waterloo.
A parade of offices and shops, aimed at attracting the likes of Marks & Spencer, would complete the ambitious development.
Community leaders launched the project two years ago after deciding the Plaza, twice saved from closure by volunteers, must be rebuilt if it is to survive.
They are confident of receiving about £5m of government cash from the North West Development Agency with a private developer footing the rest of the bill.
But they say Sefton council must hand over the library and civic hall site for free if the plan is to progress. Crosby MP Claire Curtis-Thomas, a cinema trustee, said: "We need to see some really positive enthusiasm from the council.
"This is a £14m project and I do not know where the council would otherwise find so much money to redevelop a crucial location."
