Tragic tale of love and death turned into a TV drama

Apr 11 2006

By Mike Hornby, Liverpool Echo

Timothy Spall and Brenda Blethyn in ITV's Mysterious Creatures recreate the tragic tale of Bill and Wendy Ainscow

THEIR ordeal touched the hearts of every parent in Merseyside.

Now the tragic story of suicide pact couple Bill and Wendy Ainscow has been made into a prime-time drama for ITV.

Mysterious Creatures stars Timothy Spall as jailed postmaster Bill, and Oscar-winner Brenda Blethyn is long-suffering Wendy.

The 90-minute drama tells the story of how their family was torn apart by daughter Lisa's Asperger syndrome and her addiction to spending money.

Lisa's obsessions with shoes - she had almost 2,000 pairs - and cuddly toys left the Ainscows with crippling debt.

Her parents said each day she would demand luxurious treats such as designer clothes and meals in Merseyside's finest restaurants, and if they said no she would threaten or attempt to take her own life.

Her other compulsions included writing to well known figures, notably Prince Charles and Tony Blair.

It was an ordeal which led to 75-year-old Mr Ainscow's imprisonment and ultimately claimed his life in a suicide pact in which his wife survived.
