My pledge of justice

A SCHEME to help victims of miscarriages of justice has been launched in Liverpool.

It is hoped the Life after Life project will lead to the opening of the UK's first support centre for people released after being wrongly imprisoned.

It has been set up by John Kamara, 50, from Toxteth, who was freed from prison six years ago after his conviction for murdering a bookmaker was quashed.

He had spent 19 years behind bars and has since become a father. He has two children, William, 3, and Thomas, 16 months.

Mr Kamara, who is is using £ 100,000 of the £ 900,000 compensation he received, said: "I wish I had advice when I left prison.

"The world was so different and I sometimes wanted to go back to prison as I was used to that life.

"I was thrown out on to the streets with no home and no support structure to help me integrate back into the community."

He has spoken to Liverpool Housing Trust about acquiring a house in Toxteth to establish the planned centre.

It would offer miscarriage of justice victims counselling and advice about life-skills and getting a job.

The scheme is being supported by Liverpool Riverside Labour MP Louise Ellman who campaigned for his release from prison.
