Five months of jams on Strand

May 25 2006

By Nick Coligan, Liverpool Echo

Traffic, traffic everywhere . . . at The Strand caused by 'The Big Dig'

MOTORISTS are bracing themselves for traffic misery as £3m city centre roadworks start.

Workmen will move onto The Strand, between James Street and Water Street, on Tuesday for five months.

Work will be carried out from Monday to Friday, 7am to 7pm, although some will be done at off-peak times (9.30am-3.30pm) and occasionally at night.

* Phase one: Closure of the northbound lane next to the central reservation for five months, and the southbound lane next to the central reservation off-peak times for seven weeks.

* Phase two: Month-long kerb and pavement works between Water Street and James Street on the northbound side.

* Phase three: Kerb improvements and changes to the road alignment from Water Street to James Street, requiring an off-peak closure of a southbound lane for six weeks. The building site will be closed down after this phase forthe Mathew Street Festival and Cycle Tour.

* Phase four: Month-long resurfacing works done with overnight lane closures, split into sections. Noisy works, such as planing off the old road surface, will take place between 7pm and 11pm, with quieter works from 11pm to 6am.

* Phase five: Paving works and tidy-up for a week.

* Phase six: Running alongside phases one, two and three to create a right turn from the Mersey tunnel exit.
