PC rams runaway car to avert a tunnel tragedy

Jun 16 2006

By Adrian Butler Daily Post Staff

PC Adrian Smith managed to stop a runaway car in the Birkenhead tunnel and avert a major disaster

A QUICK-THINKING police officer narrowly averted a rush-hour disaster in the Birkenhead tunnel yesterday, after a car driver collapsed at the wheel.

PC Adrian Smith saw the vehicle weaving out of control in the tunnel, its driver slumped unconscious, and managed to turn his police car round and bring it to a halt by ramming it into the wall.

Last night, PC Smith's commanding officer said he would be recommending him for an award.

The officer was driving through the tunnel on the way to a drink-drive initiative in Birkenhead when he spotted a car coming towards him with no-one at the wheel.

The driver was unconscious after suffering a suspected heart attack, leaving the passenger helplessly trying to bring his Fiat to a halt.

The car was careering in and out of traffic and smashing into walls.

PC Smith performed a dramatic U-turn and chased the runaway car.
