A QUICK-THINKING police officer narrowly averted a rush-hour disaster in the Birkenhead tunnel yesterday, after a car driver collapsed at the wheel.
PC Adrian Smith saw the vehicle weaving out of control in the tunnel, its driver slumped unconscious, and managed to turn his police car round and bring it to a halt by ramming it into the wall.
Last night, PC Smith's commanding officer said he would be recommending him for an award.
The officer was driving through the tunnel on the way to a drink-drive initiative in Birkenhead when he spotted a car coming towards him with no-one at the wheel.
