Anger as JMU cuts 35 jobs and language courses

Jun 23 2006

Liverpool John Moores University

STAFF and students at Liverpool John Moores University reacted with outrage last night after it emerged courses in languages and business are to close with the loss of up to 35 jobs.

The University and College union (UCU) vowed to fight back, saying staff had not been consulted about the planned closures of the two schools in languages and business information.

It means dozens of students who were due to enrol on the courses from September will have to find alternative courses, either at JMU or other colleges in the North West.

The UCU has now invoked a formal dispute with the university to fight what it describes as "ill-considered and mismanaged redundancies."

Although it has said it will take no industrial action at this stage, it has demanded a full investigation into the proposed redundancies and the reasons behind the university's decision.

The changes affect the faculty of business and law, and will see a number of language and business courses being dropped with immediate effect.

The announcement has been met with anger and dismay from existing and former students, who say they have been kept in the dark about the changes.
