MORE than 2,000 cyclists braved one of the hottest days of the year to take part in the region's biggest bike ride.
The 13th annual Liverpool-Chester ride involved the temporary closure of both Mersey tunnels to traffic to allow the cyclists to complete the 54-mile round trip.
The event is not a race but aims to promote cycling and healthy lifestyles.
Individuals and groups raise money for their favourite charities, including the race's official beneficiary, Barnardo's.
This year, cyclists from as far afield as Melbourne took to their wheels and enjoyed the rare opportunity of being able to cycle undisturbed through both Mersey tunnels - the Birkenhead tunnel on the way out, and the Wallasey tunnel for the return journey.
Mark Sandamas, event director for organisers Healthstart/ Pennine Events, said: "This year we expect to raise over £8,000 for Barnardo's.
"It has been one of the best entries we've had and shows the tremendous appetite for an event like this.
"The volume of people taking part creates its own atmosphere. Having exclusive use of the Mersey tunnels is a big attraction and creates a buzz.
