The doctorate was conferred on him yesterday at the Philharmonic Hall at the start of a week of Liverpool University's graduation ceremonies.
He said: "It is great to get an honorary degree from my home town. It is a great acknowledgement of what we have been doing.
"When the Mersey Sound came out, a lot of people were a bit sniffy about it.
"This confirms what we always thought.
"I read a few poems at the ceremony. It is such a short time, I didn't want to be all po-faced. I was tempted to tell them about all my struggles and heartache but I thought 'get over it, make them laugh'."
McGough read out his infamous Early Day Motion poem at the ceremony congratulating the city on its 2008 success, which was deemed too controversial to be read out in the House of Commons because it included the word sarnie.
