Union set to fight hospital job cuts

UNION bosses today vowed to fight hospital plans to sack more than 80 staff.

Debt-crippled Southport and Ormskirk hospital trust yesterday announced 33 people would lose their jobs in days, with 50 more going in a matter of months.

The trust has indicated a total of 250 jobs would go over the next few years, according to union Amicus.

Today the union said it would fight to halt the job losses and make sure patients did not lose out.

It claimed the trust had not exhausted other possibilities to balance its books and save £2.5m.

Amicus official Debbie Brannan said: "Our members and patients should not have to bear the brunt of these deficits and we will do everything we can to stop these cuts.

"Any plans to cut jobs can only lead to a poorer service for patients."

The trust tried to shed 200 jobs through voluntary redundancies, but when this failed it announced the compulsory cuts.

Jonathan Parry, trust chief executive, said: "This is not something the trust is proud of and we will continue to do all we can to limit the number of staff affected."

The trust had to save £14m in two years and, as 70% of costs was staff pay, job losses were inevitable. A recruitment freeze was saving £750,000.
